Be sure to arrive early to our mixed repertory program, PLAY for a special treat in the theater lobby. Houston Ballet Trustee Leigh Smith has carefully curated a visual arts exhibit comprised of work by three Texas artists. In keeping with the theme of the PLAY program, all of the works resonate with the thoughts and feelings surrounding Hurricane Harvey while simultaneously reflecting Houston's resilience in the face of tremendous upheaval and damage.
Helen Altman was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama and currently lives and works in Fort Worth, Texas. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and Masters of Arts degree at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa and her Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of North Texas, Denton. Her work is included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Dallas Museum of Art; the Art Museum of Southeast Texas, Beaumont; the Art Museum of South Texas, Corpus Christi; the Houston Airport System, City of Houston; and the University of Houston, Texas. She has an upcoming exhibition at The Old Jail Art Center, Albany, Texas in the summer of 2018 and has recently had solo exhibitions at the Tyler Museum of Art, Texas and the Longview Museum of Fine Arts, Texas. Her work has also been included in solo exhibitions at the Grace Museum, Abilene, Texas; the Galveston Arts Center, Texas, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, California.
Chris Bexar is a Houston artist with a background in painting and sculpture using electronic refuse. He now works with photography and computer programs which enable him to alter images. He meticulously arranges images of computer components and combines this with the forms of real building to mimic urban space. Bexar has exhibited with several galleries in New York, Dallas, and Houston. His museum exhibitions include group shows at the Galveston Arts Center, Wichita Falls Museum of Art, Austin Museum of Digital Art, and the Art Car Museum Houston.
Alexander Squier is a conceptual artist who works across media including printmaking, drawing, photography, video and installation. Squier earned his BFA from the University of Rochester, and his MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston (Tufts University) in 2013. He taught printmaking there before returning to his hometown of Houston. Currently, Squier has a studio at Box 13 Artspace in Houston's East End, and teaches printmaking at the Glassell School of Art, the University of Houston, and Art League Houston.
