La Bayadere
Thursday, February 25  to Sunday, March 7
In celebration of its 40th season, Houston Ballet will stage a brand new production of an historic classic, La Bayadère. This world premiere by Stanton Welch is an exotic story of the temple dancer, Nikiya, her lover, Solor, and the vengeance that keeps them apart, at least in this life. Set in northern India, La Bayadère will dazzle audiences with lavish scenery and costumes. It will thrill novices and balletomanes alike with its strong classical performances including the famous Shades scene, staged for the entire corps de ballet. Recommended age: 5

American at Heart
Thursday, March 11  to Sunday, March 21
Together in one program: three ballets that changed the landscape of American dance. It wasn’t West Side Story that made American choreographer Jerome Robbins a celebrity, but his first ballet, Fancy Free, staged when he was just 24. Though he was born in Russia, George Balanchine is often regarded as America’s greatest choreographer. His Apollo traces the birth of the god and his flirtation with the muses who inspire him. Though he’s not American born, Christopher Bruce’s Hush is. It’s a comic and moving celebration of life set to the music of Yo-Yo Ma and Bobby McFerrin. Recommended age: 5

Pecos
Thursday, May 27  to Sunday, June 6
What fun an art that can be at once vibrant and lyrical, contemporary and classical. Mark Morris’s Sandpaper Ballet is filled with the wit, humor and inventive movement for which he is known. George Balanchine’s Ballo Della Regina is a virtuoso set of variations, pure neoclassical dance at its finest. Stanton Welch’s Pecos Bill dramatizes the tale of the legendary cowboy and his poignant romance with the gutsy tomboy Sluefoot Sue. Hats off to light-hearted ballet. Recommended age:5

La Fille Mal Gardee
Thursday, June 10  to Sunday, June 20
Love and laughter. Flirtation and farce. This is the charm of La Fille mal gardée. Long regarded as one of dance’s greatest comedies, The Wayward Daughter delights with colorful characters and witty choreography by Sir Frederick Ashton. With its combination of classical ballet, folk dance and over-the-top personalities, The Wayward Daughter is ideal for the entire family. If you liked The Nutcracker, you’ll love La Fille mal gardée.
