SYNOPSIS

For our second “Unconventional Ballet at the Convention Center,” Global Movements has been completely reimagined by Artistic Director Stanton Welch as Play with memorable ballets created just for this unique space.  Welch's beloved Play and Bolero Triptych return but both re-worked and re-choreographed just for this space plus the event includes four World Premieres that will reflect on and celebrate Houston's resilience after Hurricane Harvey.  With a stage that extends into the audience on three sides, this theatre creates an immersive experience, bringing you closer to the dancers than ever before.  It's an event not likely to be repeated.

“Houston is a very resilient city. You can tell that about the fabric of this community by the way we all helped each other through Hurricane Harvey and returned to our lives as best we could so quickly.  When devastating and horrific things happen, the arts are the first to comes back.  We respond by making poems, songs and dances about our experiences. This program will celebrate our community. We all went through this, and now we are writing and creating about it together. We shared this experience. We love this city. This is our reaction.”

-Stanton Welch, Houston Ballet Artistic Director

In addition to the amazing on-stage performances, patrons will be treated to a curated visual arts exhibit in the theater lobby, further celebrating how artists throughout the Houston arts community have responded and continue to flourish.
