Christopher Gray

Christopher Gray started his training in ballet at the age of four with The Goh Ballet, under the directorship of Choo Chait Goh, in his hometown of Vancouver, Canada. He later supplemented his dance education with contemporary, jazz, and Hip Hop with Rachael Porrier at Danzmode. At the age of 18, after receiving the Solo Seal from the Royal Academy of Dance, he joined Alberta Ballet, where he performed for five seasons. His repertoire from his time there includes: Puck in Christopher Wheeldon's A Midsummer Night's Dream; The Prince in Mikko Nissinen's The Nutcracker; the lead in George Balanchine's Rubies; Mercutio in Jean Grands-Maitre's Romeo and Juliet; as well as the White Rabbit in Edmund Stripe's Alice in Wonderland.

 In search of new challenges and repertoire, Mr. Gray joined Houston Ballet in 2007, fulfilling his lifelong dream of dancing for a major American company. During his time with the Company, he has had the pleasure of performing a wide range of work, including a number of Stanton Welch's ballets. Among his favorites have been Falling, Velocity, Divergence, Clear, and Maninyas. He has been featured as the Blue Boy and Alain in Sir Frederick Ashton’s Les Patineurs and La Fille Mal Gardée respectively, the Fire God in Stanton Welch's La Bayadere, Gremio in John Cranko's The Taming of the Shrew, the Beggar Chief in Sir Kenneth MacMillan’s Manon, Bratfisch in Sir Kenneth MacMillan's Mayerling, the Lead Pontivedrian in Ronald Hynd's The Merry Widow, the Bluebird in Ben Stevenson’s The Sleeping Beauty, Demetrius in John Neumeier’s A Midsummer Night's Dream, and the Djinn (Genie) in David Bintley's Aladdin.

 A lover of contemporary ballet, Mr. Gray has had the good fortune to dance works by some of his favorite choreographers including: Jiří Kylián’s Soldiers' Mass, Sinfonietta and Sechs Tänze; Hans Van Manen’s (Yellow Boy) Solo, William Forsythe's Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude; and Christopher Bruce’s (Younger Son) Hush, (Angel) Intimate Pages and (Tie Boy) Ghost Dances.

One of the highlights of his career was performing the title role in Trey McIntyre's Peter Pan. It marked his first principal role for Houston Ballet. He was promoted to demi-soloist the following season (2013), accomplishing two more of his childhood dreams. In 2016, Mr. Gray was promoted to soloist. He credits his success to his family, friends, teachers and countless others that have always been there with their love and support.
