La Fille Mal GardéeHouston Ballet Age Guidelines for Children

Houston Ballet welcomes children and families to our performances. We want to encourage children to experience the magic of classical and contemporary ballet and fall in love with the art form.

It is difficult to determine the exact age that is right to attend Houston Ballet performances. In our rich history of presenting ballet, we have observed that some of our more mature repertory programs can be challenging for younger children. We have created the guidelines below based on these experiences. Houston Ballet does not permit any infants or babes in arms to be admitted to any performances. Parents should always use their discretion based on the maturity level of their children.

For questions about appropriateness of content of a specific ballet for children, please call our box office at 713.227.2787 Monday - Friday 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Successfully attending and enjoying A TWO-HOUR PERFORMANCE

For our more family-friendly story ballets, we recommend that children be at least three years of age and capable of sitting happily and quietly through a two-hour performance to attend a production.

OTHER OPTIONS FOR CHILDREN WHO BECOME RESTLESS AT A HOUSTON BALLET PERFORMANCE

Sometimes, even children who are older than 5 years may not be mature enough to sit quietly through an entire performance. In order for families to appreciate and enjoy these performances and out of consideration for other audience members, If a child of any age is too talkative, fidgety, or in any way disruptive to others in the audience, our usher staff is trained to ask the parent to take the child out into the lobby out of respect for others attending the performance. (This is similar to what happens in many churches if a child begins to cry during the service).

If parent and child have chosen to exit the theater or you have been asked to step out, our usher staff will direct parent and child to an area in the lobby of the theater where they may watch the performance on closed-circuit television until the child is settled. There is no    re-entry permitted during the performance; Houston Ballet patrons are welcome to return to their seats at the next intermission.

PERFORMANCES FOR CHILDREN AT LEAST 3 YEARS OF AGE

Houston Ballet suggests that Children should be at least 3 years of age to attend the following production(s):

  • The Nutcracker

3 years+, General Audiences – Generally suited for most audiences. Parents may attend with younger children at the parent’s discretion based on the child’s ability to enjoy quietly throughout the duration of the performance. Program may not be specifically designed for children.

PERFORMANCES FOR CHILDREN AT LEAST 7 YEARS OF AGE

Houston Ballet suggests that Children should be at least 7 years or older to attend the following productions:

  • The Sleeping Beauty
  • Academy Spring Showcase
  • Giselle ( World Premiere)

7 years+, Older Children – Program may be better suited for children old enough to decipher between make-believe and reality. If attending with younger children, it may be necessary for parents to help guide their children to understand the subjective interpretations of some higher ballet concepts. May contain minimal violence and or sexual dialogue.

PERFORMANCES FOR CHILDREN AT LEAST 13 YEARS OF AGE

Houston Ballet suggests that Children should be 13 years or older to attend the following productions:

  • West Side Story Suite – Winter Mixed Repertory
  • Serenade – Spring Mixed Repertory

13 years+ – Program may contain content that is not suitable for children younger than 13 years old.  Parents should proceed with caution when attending with younger audiences due to higher level ballet concepts, mature subject matter, and sexual or political content.

PERFORMANCES FOR CHILDREN AT LEAST 17 YEARS OF AGE

17 years+ Program may be best suited for mature audiences due to subject matter. Parents may proceed with caution when attending with younger audiences. May include some abstract movements subject to personal interpretation. May include Avant-guard costumes or scenic design, and or intense sexual or political dialogue.
