HOUSTON BALLET RETURNS TO THE KENNEDY CENTER
AS PART OF BALLET ACROSS AMERICA II JUNE 15 AND 16

HOUSTON, TEXAS --From June 15-16, 2010 Houston Ballet returns to The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. as part of Ballet Across America II, a biannual program showcasing the depth and breadth of ballet through important companies and choreographers from around the United States. Houston Ballet will perform artistic director Stanton Welch's work, Falling. Houston Ballet will give two performances of Falling at 7:30 p.m. on June 15 and 16. Tickets may be purchased by calling 800 444 1324 or by visiting www.kennedy-center.org.

Falling is a playful, pure dance work set to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Salzburg Symphonies. At the premiere of the work by San Francisco Ballet in 2005, Michael Wade Simpson of the San Francisco Chronicle observed, "The whole work has a fresh sense of direction and musicality….Falling is a delight in shades of pastel, with good ideas and excellent dancing delivered in a joyful, Mozartian spirit." In 2008, Molly Glentzer of the Houston Chronicle praised Mr. Welch for 'using the music's romantic aspects to revel in joyful classicism and its swiftness to challenge his dancers with devilishly difficult partnering."

"It's intricate, like a diamond," Mr. Welch says. "Falling utilizes a very old-fashioned, classical ballet look with rounded arms and soft shapes, nothing long and sharp."

This marks Houston Ballet's eighth appearance at The Kennedy Center over the last 27 years. The company last performed at The Kennedy Center in June 2008 as part of the first installment of Ballet Across America. Other companies performing in the Ballet Across America II series include Tulsa Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, The Suzanne Farrell Ballet, Ballet Arizona, The Joffrey Ballet, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, and North Carolina Dance Theatre.

Houston Ballet will be featured in the two opening performances of the festival, appearing on a program with The Suzanne Farrell Ballet Company (which will dance George Balanchine's Monumentum Pro Gesualdo & Movements for Piano and Orchestra) and North Carolina Dance Theater (which will dance Shindig, a work choreographed by the company's artistic director Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux).
