Mediæval Bæbes
Mediæval Bæbes, created by Houston Ballet Artistic Director Stanton Welch, was unveiled by Houston Ballet on September 18, 2008 at Wortham Theater Center in Houston, Texas. This work was not only inspired by but is also set to the music of the popular English female vocal ensemble, Mediæval Bæbes.
Mediæval Bæbes offers a sound that is unique by pulling lyrics from medieval texts and setting them to original scores using medieval and classical instruments. The music evokes an earlier time, but is accessible to a modern audience. The medieval themes of nature, the life cycle, love and longing are as relevant in 2008 as they were in 1408.
Mr. Welch, one of the most sought-after choreographers of his generation, has created ballets for such prestigious international companies as San Francisco Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, The Australian Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet in the United Kingdom, and Royal Danish Ballet. Mediæval Bæbes marks Welch's thirteenth ballet for Houston Ballet.
