Who can audition?

Students ages 6 and up are required to audition for admission into the Pre-professional and Professional Programs.

We also have recreational, non-audition classes for dancers ages 2 and up. Please refer to the Pre-School and Adult Class Program links on the Houston Ballet website for more information.

Students auditioning should have prior dance experience.

Auditions are held in the Houston Ballet Center for Dance building:

How do I preregister for an audition?

  1. Create a new username and password here.

  2. After new users create their login, log in here and click the link for Registration Forms and select Pre-Professional/Professional Preregistration Audition Form on the left side of the screen.

  3. You will be required to submit a $35 credit card payment through this form.

  4. In addition to preregistering online, you will need to complete, print and bring this audition registration form to the audition. Hard copies will be available at the audition.

  5. Bring two photos of yourself (any size & does not need to be professional quality): headshot (all ages), full body photograph in tendu in first arabesque (ages 9-11 only), full body photograph in first arabesque (ages 12-18 only).

What if I didn't preregister? May I still audition?

  1.  If you did not preregister online, you will need to complete an audition registration form. Hard copies will be available at the audition.
     
  2. Audition Fee: $40 cash on-site. 
     
  3. Bring two photos of yourself (any size): headshot (all ages), tendu in first arabesque (ages 9-11 only), or full body photograph in first arabesque (ages 12-18 only).  

What should I wear to auditions?

Women should attend auditions in a solid color leotard, pink tights, pink ballet shoes, and have their pointe shoes readily available.  Men should wear a solid color form fitting t-shirt, black tights, and ballet shoes.

What should I expect?

The audition class for ages 12+ will consist of barre, center, pointe for the women, and men's work for male applicants. The audition class for 9-11 year olds will consist of barre and center. The audition class for 6-8 year olds will consist of basic ballet and movement.   

When and how will I be notified of audition results?

Audition results will be emailed approximately one week after each audition, but no later than 2 weeks.  Please do not call Houston Ballet Academy as results will be conveyed by email only

I have been accepted into the program.  What should I do now?

If you are accepted into the program, directions as how to proceed will be relayed via email communication with parents and students. Registration forms have to be completed electronically and payment can be submitted online or by mail.

I have not been accepted into the program.  Can I get feedback from the Artistic Staff?

Unfortunately, due to the high volume of applicants, Houston Ballet cannot give feedback on why a student was not accepted into our program. 

What if I am not able to attend any of the auditions listed?

Foreign students not able to attend a scheduled audition are allowed to submit a DVD audition.  Please download the DVD Audition Form and submit it with your audition materials. Only DVDs will be accepted.  The deadlines for all DVD audition submissions are:

  • For Fall 2016: August 6, 2016
  • For Spring 2017: December 3, 2016
  • For Houston Ballet II: March 1, 2017
  • For Summer Program: January 31, 2017

Although we welcome DVD auditions, we highly encourage students to attend a scheduled audition.
