Students in levels 6-8 are eligible to audition for the year-round program during the summer. There is a $35 fee and all auditioning students must submit their current school transcript and the audition form. The audition is 1.5 hour technique class on Monday of the 4th week of the intensive. Results are posted 4 days later, and mandatory Accepted Student Meetings occur the following Monday. Prior to the start of the summer program, students should begin to consider whether or not they plan to audition and consider housing, education, and transportation costs.
The artistic staff of Houston Ballet awards a limited number of merit-based scholarships per year. Students may apply for financial aid through TADS.
Continuing Education In compliance with Texas law, all students under the age of 18 are required to work towards earning a high school diploma. Houston Ballet Academy has an Academic Program to assist students with the completion of high school through the many online and correspondence programs available. The study hall fee is $250 per semester.
Foreign students may be required to enroll in English as a second language (ESL) class offered by the Academy. The ESL fee is $250 per semester.
Performance Opportunities Students in levels 1 through HBII will participate in the Spring Performances each year. In addition, levels 8 and HBII have several performance opportunities throughout the year, including Houston Ballet's The Nutcracker, community outreach performances, an annual performance at the Jewish Community Center's annual dance month, University of Houston's Moore's School of Music, and Miller Outdoor Theater. Upper level students are also given various opportunities to understudy members of the company in Houston Ballet productions. Please refer to the Houston Ballet's season schedule for a more detailed performance schedule.
Career Planning Houston Ballet offers career planning assistance to HBII and level 7 and 8 students. Dancers are provided help with resumes/vitae preparation, and guidance for professional heat shot and arabesque photos. Workshops are held yearly. Advice and guidance on alternative dance career planning and college programs is available as needed.
